I went back into the Heart of Darkness again today. I had mowed my lawn three weeks ago. I was sure I had the beast under control. Out of sight, out of mind! Without Henry I just don't have a reason to be in the back yard. It is far too small to run laps but the grass was so thick I thought I might be able to "swim" in it ala Uncle Scrooge in his money bin. In the end I just ended up with a heinous rash from fro to toe.
We opened the back window and realized that the 70% I had mowed previously had almost regained its former glory. The other 30% actually had three plants that were taller than me. I suited up and headed in. The first round, as expected, was the worst. I had to mow the grass down to a mowable level. Uhhhh, I don't know if that makes sense but just ignore your yard for the month and it will. When I hit the tall boys they went down harder than the Mighty Casey Jones. The scary thing is that they released some weird smells once they had been cut. I can only assume that scentual release was some sort of defense mechanism because it made me want to stop mowing and go back inside.
Once I had the flora under control it was time to deal with the fauna! Spiders and moths and bugs OH MY! There were all sorts of multi legged critters fleeing the blade of my Lawn Hog. It would have been funny to view this mass bug exodus from my neighbor's yard. Hopefully they won't be too upset at the sight of a couple dozen bugs creeping through the fence and into their yard. I ain't no bugologist but I reckon some of them critters may have been endangered. I would probably be in trouble with environmentalists if they had been around to witness the destruction of such a wildlife sanctuary. I felt as if I was destroying a jungle that has slipped under the radar of humanity. Then I was reminded of where I was when my Lawn Hog started choking. It had tried to swallow one of my old shoes that Henry had partially burried. I had checked the yard for all foreign objects and had found a respectable four out of five of them. I removed the shoe from the blade and finished the job at hand.
I went back through with the old Hog on a lower setting. I can proudly say that my lawn is looking much more respectable. It is completly mowed, trimmed, and edged. Now if only I could say the same about Emma's rat tail!
